Bartender interview questions (and how to nail them)
Most bartender interviews are short and practical. Managers want to know three things: can you make drinks, can you handle a rush, and will guests like you. Prep for these and you're most of the way there.
The questions you'll get
- How would you make a [Margarita / Old Fashioned / Espresso Martini]? (Know the classics cold.)
- How do you handle a busy bar with a line three deep?
- What do you do when someone's had too much to drink?
- How do you deal with a rude or difficult customer?
- Tell me about a time you upsold or turned a slow night around.
- What's your availability — weekends, holidays, late nights?
- How do you handle a mistake on an order or a check?
- What POS systems have you used?
- Why do you want to work here specifically?
- How do you keep your station clean during a rush?
- Are you certified (TIPS/ServSafe)?
- Can you start this week?
How to nail them
- Be specific. "I stay calm, call drinks back, and work the rail in order" beats "I'm a hard worker."
- Show you know responsible service. Over-service answers separate pros from amateurs.
- Be flexible on availability — it's often the deciding factor.
- Come certified. See your state's rules on our license guide.
