What it is

Alcohol-server certification (programs like TIPS or ServSafe Alcohol, or a state-run one) trains you to serve alcohol responsibly — checking IDs, spotting intoxication, knowing the law. Many states require it for anyone serving; even where it’s optional, it makes you easier to hire.

Does your state require it?

Some states make it mandatory, others don’t, and a few run their own program (for example Texas TABC, California RBS). Search your state plus “alcohol server certification” to see the rule and which providers are accepted.

How to get it

Cost and time

Most certifications run roughly $10–$40 and take an afternoon. It’s one of the cheapest, fastest things you can do to look ready to work behind a bar.

The shortcut: be seen

However you break in, the people who get the best work aren’t the ones sending the most résumés — they’re the ones venues can already see.
